1. How to Boost your Opt-Ins WITHOUT Pop-Ups!
By Steve Shaw
This article can also be read online at
http://www.popupmaster.com/articles/withoutpopups.shtml
In this article I'll explain a powerful method you can use
to radically boost your opt-in levels, without any use of
Pop-Ups whatsoever!
Let's be honest, the number of opt-in subscribers you can
attain via the use of a popup on your web site is limited
to a proportion of the amount of traffic you receive. If,
like most web sites, the number of unique visitors you
receive every day is limited to a few hundred or less, your
opt-in list will perhaps not grow as fast as you would
like.
It's still important to use a popup to capture as many
subscriptions as you can from your visitors, but did you
know there are other complimentary ways in which you can
grow your list?
One method we all hear about of course is to submit your
ezine listing to the various ezine directories that abound
over the internet - but there are so many ezines and
newsletters nowadays, you may have been better putting your
energies elsewhere.
Did you know that there are various services that allow you
to purchase subscribers for your mailing list?
"What!", I hear you say, "I don't want to spend any money
'buying subscribers', that's ridiculous!"
Well, think about it for a second.
All internet marketers acknowledge that every one of their
subscribers has a certain monetary value over the lifetime
of their subscription. The actual value of this depends on
many factors, and it would be another subject entirely to
go into this in any depth, but if you have a well run
ezine, this value in the long term (say a twelve month
period) should far surpass what you might pay for the
individual subscriber.
So how does it work?
The 'lead provider' will advertise your ezine in various
places on the internet, usually paying a percentage of the
cost of each subscriber to the publisher of the ad, and
then forward the leads to you, either signing them up
directly to your list, or sending you a report containing
the leads collected over a certain time period. This means
that every one of those leads have 'opted in' to your list,
without going anywhere near your web site (or your popup!).
The key, of course, is finding a reputable service that can
deliver quality leads.
After a conversation with an online colleague and customer
who had recently started purchasing leads, and who was very
happy with the results he had achieved, I started to look
into using a similar service for my own list.
So I spent some time researching the various services
available - I had so many questions like how much I had to
pay per subscriber, what the quality of those subscriptions
and email addresses actually were, how credible and
reliable the service was, and so on. I certainly didn't
want to lose money down the drain.
To be honest, the majority of services I wasn't too
impressed with, but I found one that stood out from the
crowd at LeadFactory. The most
likely reason was that the service had been endorsed by
well-known guys I respected like Jim Daniels, Terry Dean
and Willie Crawford, and that it seemed incredibly flexible
to fit in with your own requirements. It was all done
automatically, no heavy files to have to manually load up
myself (unless I actually wanted to do that of course), and
they even gave you an extra 10% subscribers to
(over-)compensate for the odd undeliverable or duplicate.
So...after spending some more time looking around the site,
ensuring that it met my needs, and even contacting David
Beroff personally, one of the guys who runs the service,
I gave it a whirl.
Their service is a little more expensive than most, though
you pay for what you get, and I wanted quality and
reliability, and that's exactly what they delivered. The
subscribers started coming through almost immediately and
boosted my opt-in list more rapidly than I had ever seen
previously.
Although they don't direct the subscribers to my site, my
sales went up too as a result of the free PopUp Masters
ecourse I offer, so it was a very good result all round.
The only difficulty occurred when I suddenly stopped
getting subscribers coming through - the LeadFactory team
leapt on the issue at once. It turned out that the problem
was with my autoresponder changing some mail filtering
procedures on their server rather than LeadFactory, so they
temporarily shut down the campaign until it was resolved,
and gave me all the help I could ask for in supplying the
relevant information to my autoresponder. They also
manually sent me the details of all the subscribers, so I
didn't miss out at all. Their customer service, from my
own first hand experience, is excellent.
So, if you want to start boosting your opt-ins faster than
a PopUp on the average web site could ever hope to do, I
would thoroughly recommend the service from
LeadFactory.

2. Raising your Game in Google
By Steve Shaw
In the last issue of The Takanomi Newsletter, I set myself
a public challenge to better my rankings in the Google
search engine for my PopUpMaster.com site, and if I
met my challenge I was going to give you some tips on how
it was achieved.
I made some fairly radical changes to the layout and
structure of my site to try and achieve my aims, and then
just sat and waited for Mr. Google Spider to come visit.
I'll first tell you what I achieved, and then summarize the
techniques I used.
My site was eventually respidered by Google on 27 August,
after days of anxious waiting.
[Note: since then I've made some more (slightly less)
radical alterations to try to capitalize further on my
success, but I've stored a version of the index page that
was spidered on the site for you to view at
http://popupmaster.com/index_old.html.]
When the results came in, I analyzed my new positioning and
it was good news, though not all my targets were achieved.
Here's a summary:
- the good news, for 'javascript popup' I made it into the
all-important top ten - I'm now at number 8, a leap of six
places, and some significant extra free traffic as a result
- my Google page rank is maintained at 5/10, so no change
there - better luck next time
- I managed to maintain my position at numbers 1 and 2 for
the keywords 'popup code'
All in all, two out of three targets achieved, not bad!
So how did I do it?
I can summarize the technique I used into three main
points:
1. Raise your keywords
In the previous site design, I noticed the keywords I
wanted to aim for were actually fairly low down the page.
In my redesign, I raised them right to the top. If you go
to http://popupmaster.com/index_old.html (keep the browser
window open for later reference) you will notice that the
words 'The No.1 JavaScript PopUp Code Generator' are right
at the top of the page, and are actually text rather than
part of the banner image. I designed the banner image so
that text could be incorporated like this.
For the near future, I may alter the text on the page again
to try and boost my ranking further, for example changing
this text to an even simpler 'JavaScript PopUp Code
Generator' so that the keywords 'JavaScript PopUp' are the
first two words on the page, followed closely by the
keywords 'PopUp Code'. Also, search engines tend to
interpret the heading tags as indicating that the words in
the heading are integral to the page, so by wrapping the
text in say an H5 tag, this should boost my ranking
further.
You will notice also that in the title bar, the words
'JavaScript PopUp' are again the first two words that
appear, with 'PopUp code' not far after, and search engines
such as Google place a lot of relevance on the title bar.
2. Increase your relevant content
I spent some time incorporating some relevant articles
into the site, not just my own, but I searched around for
other relevant articles on various article submission sites
such as the following:
The important point is to ensure the articles are relevant
to the keywords you are aiming for. Many search engines
such as Google favor 'themed web sites' that focus on a
particular topic, for example in the case of
PopUpMaster.com, popups. Your content should heavily focus
around that theme - any deviations will simply dilute your
web site as a whole, and have a negative effect on your
search engine listing.
3. Increase the links pointing to your web site
This doesn't mean FFAs, they will prove of very little use
as search engines tend to ignore them. Try the following
methods for starters:
- swapping links with relevant sites
- sending (genuine) testimonials to sites where you have
used and liked their products or services, and where
other testimonials are published with a link to the
author's web site
- submitting articles as far and wide as possible for
republication
If you can manage it, try and ensure that the text of any
links to your site contain your chosen keyword(s) - this
can help to persuade the search engine that the content of
your site really does focus around the keyword, and thereby
boost your ranking.
This is a long term game, and one which I have really only
recently started. To boost my rankings much further in
Google, and especially to boost the overall 'Page rank' of
my page, links are going to be a very important factor.
Playing the search engine game is a long term constant
battle. You need to constantly try new techniques to boost
your search engine rankings while not damaging your
existing ranking. As a technically-literate marketer with a
fairly good grasp of what the search engines are looking
for, I'm happy to do the whole process manually for now and
test my luck - I like a good challenge every now and again.
Help from the Experts
However, I am now looking into getting some proper expert
help to ease the process - I just don't have the time these
days to constantly tweak my site based on my own long and
painful research.
One product I consistently hear great things about from a
variety of sources, such as online colleagues, the relevant
press, top search engine professionals, and so on, is
called WebPosition Gold. I've recently downloaded the free
trial version, started toying with it, and have already
made some changes to the site based on its reporting.
In fact, using the software I realized that I was actually
aiming at the wrong target! The keywords I was focussing on
didn't particularly attract much traffic, so to maximize
the results, I'm now aiming at a different set of keywords.
You can probably guess what the main keyword is now by
visiting the current web site
- note the first word that appears in the title in the
top-left heading, in the main headline on the page, and, in
a technique I've recently discovered, in the navigation
links on all the pages. I'm hoping great things will come
of this!
I've only scratched the surface of WebPosition Gold at the
moment. It's still going to take a lot of time and effort
to build up my search engine presence, but at least I now
know I'm aiming in the right direction and using all the
best techniques, so in the long run it's well worth it.
The software can analyze your site and give you up to date
advice on how to improve your ranking across various search
engines. It seems to be highly recommended by virtually
anyone with an online business, and also by search engine
specialists, and if the testimonials are anything to go by,
it should result in many improvements to my own business.
I'll keep you informed.
If you want to take a look at the software yourself, get the free download, and see
if it could help you too, just go to
click here. Let me know what
you think.
And if you already use it, perhaps you could tell me what
your own experiences are of the software, I may publish
some of these responses in the next issue for us all to
share (and get some extra traffic for the contributors in
the process).
